A lot of times, we want everything to be perfect before we will take a step forward. We want everyone else to step forward for a task before we’ll do it ourselves. It’s a perfectly legitimate argument. The world can be scary so it makes sense to only stick our heads out of our hole once or twice a year. The catch is, we will have a long, hard slog of a time making any real progress with that approach to life, & we may never find out what's behind the next horizon. While it’s true that the tortoise wins the race, it’s also true that the hare is central to the story. Can you imagine a world without any bugs bunnies?
The point is if we wait until everything is perfect to try something bigger than we’ve done before, then the likelihood that we will ever try is very low. Gretsky said “we miss 100% of the shots we don’t take.” Babe Ruth said “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.” There is a line that separates the “good” & the “great.” My wrestling coach used to say it like “you have to win the matches you aren’t supposed to win.” In other words, you need to keep trying more & fearing less.
I’m talking to myself as much as anyone when I say the best kind of development project is the one you do. If you never step up to the plate, you will never have a chance for a home run or even getting hit by a pitch will work in a pinch. In this land of opportunity, home plate is always waiting. The pitcher is warmed up, & it’s up to us to decide when we will step up & take a swing.
The Bible says it like “ask, seek, knock.” That’s probably where the saying “knocking on the door” came from because we know when we’re doing that, then we are close to a breakthrough. Whatever your decision, I want to encourage you today to keep stepping up, keep swinging, & above all never stop knocking (ie believing)!
